Specialists respond in a matter of days—compared to months or years spent waiting for a face-to-face appointment—and two-thirds of cases are resolved without the patient needing an in-person specialist visit. The Champlain BASE™ (Building Access to Specialists through eConsultation) eConsult service is a secure online application that offers primary care providers prompt access to specialist advice for their patients. Specialists respond in a matter of days—compared to months or years spent waiting for a face-to-face appointment—and two-thirds of cases are resolved without the patient needing an in-person specialist visit. The success of this award-winning service has made its co-founders, Drs. Clare Liddy and Erin Keely, internationally-recognized experts in eHealth implementation.

First launched in 2009 as a small proof-of-concept, eConsult has grown into a full, provincially-funded service with over 40,000 completed cases. It currently serves over 1,000 family physicians in the Champlain region. The service has been replicated or adopted in Quebec, Manitoba, British Columbia,Newfoundland and Labrador, and New Brunswick, and is currently being implemented across Ontario as a provincial level. Drs. Liddy and Keely have established the Ontario eConsult Centre of Excellence to lead the provincial expansion, which will use BASE™ as its reference model. Upon its full implementation in 2021, the Ontario eConsult Program will provide eConsult for an estimated 140,000 patients per year.
